Have you ever had one of those experiences where you knew you would never forget that one moment for the rest of your life? It was fantastic and magical and beautiful and completely breathtaking, except you were completely alone. And then you started wondering if you should tell anyone about it. On the one hand, telling
I always wonder if I will forget. No matter how wonderful the experience was, there is always the possibility of forgetting, because you can never control what you remember and what you don’t. And at least if you go ahead and tell that other person, they might not forget it, and at least you have preserved it in your own human way.
But then, once you release it from your soul, it’s out, and you can never get it back again. Once you tell someone about it, it is vulnerable and that other person can misunderstand and judge and destroy it. The only way to keep it in its purest, most organic form, is to keep it a secret.
That’s why one has to be so careful in picking the person they want to tell.
Most of the time, once you let this experience out, the ones who judge it will tell you that the thing you experienced is so excruciatingly ordinary, it wasn’t even worth noting, and you realize everybody has these magical moments. And that can be disheartening. But perhaps the most magical thing about is that you appreciated it, and you thought it was magical. And if everybody has these sorts of experiences and revelations, then perhaps it is that much worse for the people who don’t get to experience them. What must it be like to have never experienced the wonder and feeling of insignificance of standing beneath a sky full of stars? Or perhaps sitting in a car with really breathtaking music on, watching as a rising sun yawns on the horizon, while every other part of the landscape swings by? Once you let these sorts of things out, they become marginalized and are compromised by the limits of the English language.
But perhaps the reason these things are so magical is because they are so ordinary.
